A.C.L.U. in $50 Million Push to Reduce Jail Sentences

The funding from George Soros’s Open Society Foundations aims to slash an incarceration rate in the United States that has tripled since 1980.

 “Whether the human cost or the societal cost, what we’re doing in the criminal justice system isn’t working,” Mr. Holden said. “We’re finding common ground with people with different political affiliations,” he said, praising the advocacy work of the A.C.L.U. in this field. Washington’s own Alison Holcomb will be directing this project, who led the effort here to legalize marijuana.
