Agreed…the article doesn’t take into consideration that certain specialties are sued more often such as spinal surgeons and OB docs, as they are high-risk specialties…obviously, they would be at risk for multiple suits! Males have a higher rate of being sued as there are more male physicians, and the numbers given for the relationship between the age of the doctor and number of cases brought against them is just silly; where is there consideration for new technology and a learning curve? There is also no mention of the fact that 78% of all medical malpractice claims do not result in payments to the plaintiff. This article warrants a Letter to the Editor of the NY Times, where this was published! Check out for a more responsible and accurate accounting of these claims.
